{"id":437,"date":"2007-07-02T19:44:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-02T19:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gentlemancyclist.co.uk\/?p=437"},"modified":"2024-01-29T10:57:15","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T10:57:15","slug":"family-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gentlemancyclist.co.uk\/?p=437","title":{"rendered":"Family Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Posted on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gentlemancyclist.co.uk\/2007\/07\/02\/family-debate\/\"><strong>2 July 2007<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have just had a new experience \u2013 I was a judge in a School\u2019s debating competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make it even better, the teacher organising the competition was my daughter Ellen. And one of the other judges was my younger son Graham. Another was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/philosophy\/Staff\/norman.html\">Prof. Richard Norman<\/a>\u00a0(any relation, Liz?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were three debates in the morning and two in the afternoon. The topics were:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEuthanasia should be made legal\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA law banning Incitement to Hatred has no place in a Liberal Democracy\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSoap Operas have no artistic merit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf Global Warming is happening, there is no evidence that it is man-made\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no room for ethics in British foreign policy\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was one of 3 judges in nos 1, 4 &amp; 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think my proudest moment was during debate 2, when Ellen took the Chair, and Prof. Norman and Graham were 2 out of the 3 judges, and Graham\u2019s mate Steve was the other. Watching Ellen chairing the debate as though she had been doing it all her life, and listening to Graham asking really searching questions of the two teams, totally confident in front of an audience, brought a tear to my eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of debate no. 2, after we were at Ellen\u2019s house eating Chinese food, Graham summed things up succinctly: \u201cQuoting John Stuart Mill and Utilitarianism when you are in the Lower Sixth is pretty fucking impressive!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably just as well that he saved that one up for when the Head Teacher was out of earshot!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted on&nbsp;2 July 2007 I have just had a new experience \u2013 I was a judge in a School\u2019s debating competition.
